Wiki is accessible without log-in!

The Construction Ergonomics wiki is now availalbe without the need to provide log-on credentials. This lowers one barrier to encouraging casusal viewers to provide feedback to the development team

New Material Needed

For those who have been tracking our progress in uploading material on the wiki, you will have noticed that our progress has slowed considerably over the past day. The reasson for this is that we are reaching the end of the resources we have on Construction Ergonomics. We anticipate substantial additions to the Prevention-through-design page in the Construction Ergonoics section. Also, considerable additions will be made to the page "External websites." If you have something you would like us to upload, please send the material to marcinoregon@gmail.com and let us know how you would like the material distributed.

Private beta launched now scheduled for July

After consulting with various parties, we have decided to delay the "private beta" launch until we have identified our target audience(s) and the best way to create a panel of expert informants who can provide feedback on the the wiki's development. To elicit feedback, we will asked invited individuals to complete a survey (with open and closed) questions on surveymonkey.com.

That's all for now,

MW

New Domain Names!

The domain names:

  • OshWiki.org
  • ConstructionWiki.org
  • ErgoWiki.org

now all take you directly to the Construction Ergonomics wiki.

Brand and Identity!

A few colleagues not involved in the development of the wiki have stated that the ORC banner confused them and it took some time to explain fully that the site is intended to be open source. A couple thought that ORC owned the intellectual property. This will need to be addressed prior to our public launch. Does it have to be resolved prior to the "private beta" evaluation and the beta evaluation? Please comment.
Please refer to Home for information about the space.

Private Beta Evaluation!

Let me know if you would like to be involved in designing the evaluation methodology. Contact me at marcinoregon@gmail.com or just register and comment.

Send Your Material!

We can post new material for the private beta evaluation. Just send me what you would like us to post.

New Features

Jacob worked up some code to display the 75 most recent changes on the wiki.

New Material

We are continuing to upload new material on the wiki. Brian will be updating information of operating engineers. And Sara has a large document related to safety for electrical and mechanical trades. Morgan is developing material related to PtD and MSD risk exposure reduction.

Private Beta Launch

For purposes of convenience to our informal expert informants, the wiki will be public on Thursday, June 25. We may delay our invitations for our initial round of user feedback until we settle on a domain name and have the site seamlessly link to the site.

In our invitation during for private beta, I will include a link to a survey.

Ideas for Survey

Please add/edit:

Beta Feedback

Jacob did a very nice and quick job on the portal of Construction Ergonomics. Thanks!

Sara and Brian are continuing to upload files. From time to time, you will see that I moved things from one directory to another.

I am having Jacob look into developing an interface for the iPhone. To get a sense of what I have in mind visit:

http://limechat.net/wikiamo/

Also, Scott mentioned there is a plug-in to render pages on the Blackberry. As we know between the iPhone and Blackberry, we have pretty much universal coverage for our mobile stakeholders.

For those of you haven't used an mobile app like Wikiamo, you may not appreciate how advantageous it can be to get this going right on mobile apps.

Morgan set up a SurveyMonkey account. I will be in touch with various people about data collection for the private beta launch.

Finally, I have been searching the Internet high and low for good wikis that we can learn from. I must say I haven't found anything that comes close to ours. (Does this mean this is a really bad or a really good idea?)I'll keep looking.

Thanks,

MW

A couple of notable changes today.

I added Picks of the Week on the portal page.

I also tried to rearrange the directory structure of the page of Masons and Tenders.

In places, I have been trying to shorten the names of pages, so as to increase the readability of the wiki hierarchy.

Finally, I just asked Jacob to give me his opinion as to how difficult it would be to create an iPhone app to work with the wiki.

Posting June 19, 2009 5:33pm EST

O.k. I am calling this post #1a only because I am manually reposting it. We some how lost the news page and blog between 3-5pm EST on 6/18. We'll figure out what's going on, and I'll update you.

Originally posted on June 19 about 7pm PST.

So, if you got this far, then you didn't mind too much receiving my long e-mail note. I am writing, this with Rachel Maddow in the background, so apologies for any typos, missed words, etc.

In the last day we have made good progress:

1) We now have the ability to place pages, simultaneously under multiple nodes.
2) Are settling on attribute formats that are providing multiple and credits to the content on the wiki.
3) Had a helpful discussion on the future of the wiki, domain names, etc.
4) Defined the Construction Ergonomics wiki as an experiment to determine how best to structure a wiki to elicit maximum response from a small population of academic researchers, private sector individuals, and practitioners.

Also, below is the content of the note I sent a few minutes ago.

Dear All

I would like for Thursday, June 25 to be the date that we launch a beta version of the Construction Wikis page. By "beta" I have in mind allowing the url: http://orcehs.org/wiki/display/orcehs/Construction+Ergonomics to be opened to viewing without registration. During this beta, we will invite a target audience (to be determined with input from CPWR and ORC). During this period of invited viewing, individuals will not have to log on, but they can if they want. In my view, the primary goal of the beta launch is not to develop the wiki, but to elicit feedback and data from a target audience to learn what should be changed to facilitate their future contributions to the wiki. Then, we can incorporate these ideas and re-launch the wiki on a to-be-determined domain name (perhaps chosen on the wiki) to a broader audience in July. We are moving quickly because the UO subcontract from CPWR ends on June 30. I will continue working on this after that date, and we'll decide in July or August whether this effort is worth continuing.

Our research team, sponsored by CPWR, is beginning to view the Construction Ergonomics Wiki as an experiment to explore the potential attributes and liabilities of wikis in the area of construction worker safety, I am working on formalizing the methodology for doing this. In writing this document, to be presented on the wiki, open to edits, I will discuss what can be reasonably tested (i.e. what are good performance benchmarks) given the relatively small target audience. The launch in July will give us additional data about the value of building out future wikis in related areas.

I will be in contact with various people about different aspects of our pilot roll out. In short, here is what I have in mind:

Consideration of Target audience

I will be in touch with Mary (Director of Communications, CPWR) and Jim (Director of Research, CPWR) and Scott (Senior Consultant, ORC Worldwide) Others weigh in, as you would like.

Consideration of initial list of invitees

Sharon Garber (not yet formally involved on this project) has provided a list of people. We should think about categories of individuals. Anyone can weigh in with suggestions. Thanks

Development of Feedback Instrument/Identification of metrics

Let me know if you would like to be included in circulation of the first draft.

I will be in touch with Scot Madar and Jacob Vineyard (UO undergrad programmer) about whether we can embed feedback questions in the wiki, without requiring registration.

Major tasks prior to June 25 launch

Continued uploading of public domain material on wiki
Develop content for Safety in Design research (Morgan)
Development of new content (Marc and Jen)
Continued editing on content, identification of pages without full or proper attribution (Helen, Marc, Morgan)

I will post the content of this note in the form of a blog on the site in just a moment. Future updates will be on the Development blog at http://orcehs.org/wiki/display/orcehs/Construction+Ergonomics so you won't have to be bothered by too much email, unless you elicit it.

Thanks Steve, Tonette, and Tom (and others) for reading this far. If you haven't done so recently, you may want to view the wiki for recent changes.
